{"id":852,"date":"2014-03-17T15:59:22","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T19:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/?p=852"},"modified":"2014-03-17T15:59:22","modified_gmt":"2014-03-17T19:59:22","slug":"lessons-learned-at-the-2014-australian-grand-prix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/lessons-learned-at-the-2014-australian-grand-prix\/","title":{"rendered":"Lessons Learned at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the first race in a season full of new technical regulations, the Australian Grand Prix was always going to be a learning experience for everyone involved.\u00a0 Now that the champagne has been uncorked and the teams have moved on to the next venue, it\u2019s time to take a look at what we learned from the start of F1\u2019s new era.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AUSGPPodium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-854 aligncenter\" alt=\"AUSGPPodium\" src=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AUSGPPodium.jpg\" width=\"620\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AUSGPPodium.jpg 620w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AUSGPPodium-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>All aboard the power train.<\/h3>\n<p>There was a great deal of moaning about the new turbocharged V6 engines leading up to the start of the season.\u00a0 The general consensus was that they were going to sound like blenders and that the majority of the cars would end the first race in a cloud of smoke.\u00a0 As it turns out, reliability isn\u2019t as much of a concern as many feared, even with the \u201cproblem child\u201d Renault units.\u00a0 Mercedes in particular have come up with an impressive piece of engineering, and the torque from the hybrid power units has had an unanticipated benefit.\u00a0 With the cars constantly on the verge of spinning out, the world\u2019s best drivers are now required to demonstrate their skills at every single corner.\u00a0 And while your mileage may vary, I think the new engines sound pretty darned cool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Fresh faces are frighteningly fast.<\/h3>\n<p>The Australian Grand Prix ended up being something of a showcase event for the sport\u2019s rookies, along with some faces who had previously flown under the radar.\u00a0 Kevin Magnussen made it abundantly clear that he deserves to start his career at McLaren, and Daniel Ricciardo has already justified Red Bull\u2019s decision to promote him to the senior team.\u00a0 The absurdly young Daniil Kvyat put in an excellent points finish in the Toro Rosso, and Valtteri Bottas finally showed what he can do with a competitive car.\u00a0 With veterans like Vettel, Hamilton, and Massa stranded on the sidelines, the new kids on the block put on one heck of a show.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Time to invest in silver.<\/h3>\n<p>After four years of Red Bull Racing acting as the sport\u2019s golden standard for performance, it looks like the silver teams have shot up in value for 2014.\u00a0 Nico Rosberg\u2019s crushing win showed just how fast the Mercedes is this year, while the equally shiny McLarens showed that the team is once again a force to be reckoned with.\u00a0 Anyone still unconvinced that this year\u2019s winning car will be painted silver clearly didn\u2019t watch the race\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>White is the new black.<\/h3>\n<p>\u2026 Unless they saw the incredible comeback drive from Valtteri Bottas.\u00a0 After dropping to last place with a thoroughly deceased tire, the Finn stormed his way up the field to finish comfortably in the points.\u00a0 If the black and gold Lotus cars were the promising underdogs last year, the revitalized Williams organization has taken on that mantle for 2014.\u00a0 With a beautiful livery, a talented veteran, and a flying Finn, the popular team may be on its way to a comeback season.\u00a0 After all, they\u2019ve already scored more points than they did over the entire 2013 season.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Australian drivers have terrible luck.<\/h3>\n<p>With his impressive drive to second place, Daniel Ricciardo did what Mark Webber never could: score a podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix.\u00a0 Or, rather, he would have if he hadn\u2019t been subsequently disqualified by the FIA.\u00a0 The race stewards declared that Ricciardo\u2019s car ran with an illegally high fuel flow rate, while Red Bull Racing maintains that the car was fine and the fuel sensor was faulty.\u00a0 The disqualification has been appealed by the team, but whatever the final decision may be, one thing is certain: Australian drivers, especially those employed by Red Bull, just can\u2019t catch a break.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<address>Pit Box One is written by Paul Jensen.
