{"id":738,"date":"2014-02-12T11:21:05","date_gmt":"2014-02-12T16:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/?p=738"},"modified":"2014-02-12T11:21:05","modified_gmt":"2014-02-12T16:21:05","slug":"unboxing-the-english-edition-of-weiss-schwarz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/unboxing-the-english-edition-of-weiss-schwarz\/","title":{"rendered":"Unboxing the English Edition of Weiss Schwarz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If there\u2019s one thing anime fans love, it\u2019s tracking down merchandise from our favorite shows.\u00a0 Print our favorite characters on anything from a mug to a messenger bag and we\u2019ll buy it.\u00a0 Naturally, then, I was intrigued to learn about a trading card game based around popular anime franchises.\u00a0 I threw some money at the Internet, and soon had a pair of <a href=\"http:\/\/ws-tcg.com\/en\/\">Weiss Schwarz<\/a> trial decks.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what I learned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSCoverImg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-734 aligncenter\" alt=\"WSCoverImg\" src=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSCoverImg.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSCoverImg.jpg 675w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSCoverImg-300x142.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i>Photos courtesy of my phone&#8217;s lousy camera.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Weiss Schwarz is a trading card game that licenses anime, manga, and video game characters instead of offering the usual selection of orcs and dragons.\u00a0 There are English versions of several of their releases, including four anime series and the Vocaloid characters (because you can\u2019t have anime without Hatsune Miku).\u00a0 If you can read Japanese or don\u2019t mind referring to online forums for card translations, there\u2019s a much more extensive selection to choose from.\u00a0 For this article, I bought the English starter decks for <i>Madoka Magica<\/i> and <i>Bakemonogatari<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The pre-built Trial Decks come in a retail-friendly, impulse buy-inducing display box.\u00a0 My local post office was thoughtful enough to confirm that the packaging is sturdy enough to survive some rough handling during the shipping process.\u00a0 Opening the box is a simple matter of cutting a few pieces of tape with a box cutter or pocket knife.\u00a0 No profanity or bandages were necessary, which is a good sign given my clumsiness and low tolerance for complex packaging.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSMadokaBox.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-735 aligncenter\" alt=\"WSMadokaBox\" src=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSMadokaBox.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"927\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSMadokaBox.jpg 675w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSMadokaBox-218x300.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>1300 yen INCLUDING tax? I&#8217;m sold!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Along with a 50-card deck, each box contains a basic rule sheet, a play mat, and an advanced rule booklet to settle the inevitable arguments over how a particular card works.\u00a0 I was a bit worried that the rules would be a hodgepodge of bad grammar that some underpaid assistant translated with a smartphone app, but was happy to be proven wrong.\u00a0 Everything was easy to understand, and the play mat is extremely helpful once you get it unfolded and flattened out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-736 aligncenter\" alt=\"WSPlayMat\" src=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"685\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat.jpg 675w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat-295x300.jpg 295w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat-96x96.jpg 96w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat-24x24.jpg 24w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat-36x36.jpg 36w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat-48x48.jpg 48w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSPlayMat-64x64.jpg 64w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>I swear it&#8217;s not as complicated as it looks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The quality of the cards themselves is reasonably high.\u00a0 They\u2019re smooth enough to shuffle easily, and appear sturdy enough to stand up to regular use.\u00a0 They have the same dimensions as a Magic: The Gathering card, so card protector sleeves should be easy to acquire.\u00a0 Weiss Schwarz does away with the fancy holo-foil cards that we\u2019ve gotten used to over the years, but fills that void by printing voice actor autographs onto the occasional character card.\u00a0 Most of a typical card is taken up by the character art, but the actual game information is plenty legible.\u00a0 My one gripe is that the ability text is small enough to require either good eyesight or a magnifying glass.\u00a0 On the whole, though, I\u2019m very happy with what I got for my money.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSSignedCards.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-737 aligncenter\" alt=\"WSSignedCards\" src=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSSignedCards.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSSignedCards.jpg 675w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSSignedCards-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Ooh, shiny.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s played a trading card game like Magic: The Gathering, Pok\u00e9mon, or Yu-Gi-Oh! should be able to pick up Weiss Schwarz fairly easily.\u00a0 Decks are mostly composed of character cards, which deal damage to your opponents and fight against their characters.\u00a0 Event cards and climax cards are thrown in help manage your deck or power up your characters.\u00a0 Whoever deals a certain amount of damage first wins the game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSCardTypes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-733 aligncenter\" alt=\"WSCardTypes\" src=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSCardTypes.jpg\" width=\"675\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSCardTypes.jpg 675w, http:\/\/sharkpuppet.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/WSCardTypes-300x128.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>From left to right: character card, climax card, event card.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The most interesting aspect of Weiss Schwarz is its ability to shift the balance of power back and forth during a game.\u00a0 After taking a certain amount of damage, players \u201clevel up\u201d and gain access to more powerful character cards.\u00a0 If your opponent beats the stuffing out of you early in the game, you can even the score by bringing out big scary cards that will mop the floor with their low-level characters.\u00a0 It makes for plenty of \u201cthis isn\u2019t even my final form\u201d jokes if you can find the right opponent.<\/p>\n<p>After playing a few games of Weiss Schwarz, I\u2019ve noticed a couple of things.\u00a0 First and foremost, the level mechanic does a great job of keeping things close until the end.\u00a0 Matches have a habit of going right down to the wire, with victory rarely certain until the last couple of turns.\u00a0 It might not support as wide a range of strategies as more complex card games, but damned if Weiss Schwarz doesn\u2019t do a great job of keeping things entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>Another positive element is the sheer absurdity of it all.\u00a0 There\u2019s something delightfully crazy about the idea of Hitagi Senjyougahara clobbering magical girls with a stapler or Saber from <i>Fate Zero<\/i> stabbing Hatsune Miku in the middle of a concert.\u00a0 As long as you can find a deck based on your favorite franchise, Weiss Schwarz appeals to that basic geek instinct of wondering which of two fictional characters would win in a fight.\u00a0 That being said, you really do need to be an anime fan to get the full effect.\u00a0 Playing Weiss Schwarz between panels at an anime convention is a much better idea than breaking it out when your friends from work come over for game night.<\/p>\n<p>For anime fans with a taste for trading card games, Weiss Schwarz is an easy recommendation.\u00a0 The game is entertaining, and the cards themselves are well made. \u00a0I\u2019m not quite blown away enough to start buying booster packs and building decks from scratch, but I can see myself buying more pre-built decks as new properties get licensed.\u00a0 Weiss Schwarz is an appealing addition to the US anime scene, and I\u2019m sure it will carve out a comfortable niche for itself.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<address>Weiss Schwarz products are available via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/search?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;index=toys-and-games&amp;keywords=weiss%20schwarz&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=sharpupp-20\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=sharpupp-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>.<\/address>\n<address>\u00a0<\/address>\n<address>Kawaii Overthink is written by Paul Jensen.
